Management of Replicated Volume Location Data in the Ficus Replicated File System

چکیده
Existing techniques to provide name transparency in distributed le systems have been designed for modest scale systems, and do not readily extend to very large conngurations. This paper details the approach which is now operational in the Ficus replicated Unix ling environment , and shows how it diiers from other methods currently in use. The Ficus mechanism permits optimistic management of the volume location data by exploiting the existing directory reconciliation algorithms which merge directory updates made during network partition.

Implementation of the Ficus Replicated File System
As we approach nation-wide integration of computer systems, it is clear that le replication will play a key role, both to improve data availability in the face of failures, and to improve performance by locating data near where it will be used. We expect that future le systems will have an extensible, modular structure in which features such as replication can be \slipped in" as a transparent l...
متن کاملPeer Replication with Selective Control
Peer-to-peer optimistic replication strategies provide improved functionality over traditional client-server models by enabling any-to-any communication. This is especially useful in environments with common network partitions, such as mobile environments, in which communicating with a closely connected peer can be cheaper than communicating with a distant, weakly connected server. However, mos...
متن کاملFile Location Management in Federated Computing Environments
The major objective of the Service Oriented Computing Environment (SORCER) is to form dynamic federations of network services that provide shared data, applications, and tools on a service grid along with exertion-oriented programming. To meet the requirements of these services in terms of data sharing and managing in the form of data files, a corresponding federated file system was developed. ...
متن کاملGranularity and Semantic Level of Replication in the Echo Distributed File System
issues in any replicated data storage system are the semantic level of replication and the granularity of replication. By the semantic level of replication, we mean the lowest level of abstraction within the system’s implementation such that the data objects stored in the replicas appear t o be equal when viewed at this level. A system that presents an external interface at a particular semanti...
متن کاملCoping with Conflicts in an Optimistically Replicated File System
Coda is a scalable distributed Unix1 file system that provides high availability through the use of two distinct but complementary mechanisms. One mechanism, server replication, stores copies of a file at multiple servers. The other mechanism, disconnected operation, is a mode of execution in which a caching site temporarily assumes the role of a replication site. Disconnected operation is part...
